This white iris is captured fully open, and the shape does a lot of the work on its own. Some petals stand upright at the center, while others flow outward and down in a soft curve, with a bright yellow marking running through the middle of each that combination gives the flower a stance that reads almost like a figure in motion, caught mid-pose.

I chose this subject because of that structure. Most flowers read as flat or symmetrical from every angle, but the iris has real posture to it upright in some places, flowing open in others. It doesn't look like every other bloom in a collection, and that's exactly why it stood out to me.

For this shot, I focused on getting the full form in frame the upright petals sharp, the flowing petals given just enough room to show their curve so the flower's natural structure carries the image instead of relying on color alone.
