The magnolia's story doesn't end when the flower drops. What comes next is arguably the more interesting chapter less about softness, more about structure. The cone's surface reads first: dense, rough, almost woody, standing in sharp contrast to the smooth petals that came before it. Then the color hits. Deep red seeds break through the bronze casing in small, tight bursts, glossy and impossible to miss against all that texture.

Getting this shot meant timing it right, the cone doesn't stay in this state for long. Once it splits open along those irregular seams, the seeds are only suspended for a short window, held on a fine silken thread before they drop. I wanted to catch that exact moment: the seed still hanging, still glossy, right before gravity takes it. A few tries later, that's what I had vivid color held inside a rugged, weathered form, exactly the contrast I was after.

The Southern Magnolia is native to the southeastern United States, running from North Carolina down through Florida and west into Texas, where it's long been a fixture of the region's landscape and history. As the seed cone matures, it hardens and splits, each opening revealing another one of these small, self-contained studies in contrast.

It's a different kind of beauty than the flower’s,  for collectors who appreciate craftsmanship in nature as much as in art, this stage is where the magnolia really earns its reputation.
